We all indulge in unique treats every now and then. From tasting street food in Turkey to trying a new Mexican recipe at home, we all need a special taste on our palate after a few days. This is where Shawarma comes in!

So, what is shawarma, you ask?

A Shawarma is a wrapped up heaven everyone must try. Exploding with flavors, textures and filling you up right away, this treat is so much like a taco but is still different in so many ways.

Haven’t tried it yet? You should definitely eat it and thank me later for introducing it to you. Meanwhile, enjoy learning a few fun facts about Shawarma written below.

What is Shawarma?

Shawarma is a tasty dish which belongs to the Middle Eastern cuisine. Interestingly, its name originates from the Turkish word ‘çevirme’ meaning ‘turn’ in English, as in meat turning on a spit or rotisserie until it is slowly cooked thoroughly.

How is Shawarma meat cooked?

Well, just like its name suggests, shawarma meat is prepared on a vertical spit and is grilled for hours until it is tender and thoroughly cooked. Also, the shawarma meat can be beef, turkey, mutton but the most commonly used meats are chicken and lamb.

How is it made?

Think of shawarma as a Middle Eastern burrito! To clarify, it is not a greek dish and you shouldn’t confuse it with similar dishes like gyros, gyro shawarmas, tacos and the like.

Shawarma is a blend of different flavors of meat, vegetables, sauces and bread. Some cooks also like to enhance the flavor by adding cheddar cheese slices and French fries in the roll.

Once the marinated meat is cooked on the spit it is thinly sliced and kept aside. Afterwards, the meat is rolled in a flatbread (pita or laffa bread) to be exact. Along with the meat, you will also find hummus, thinly sliced carrots, green chillies, pickles, Tahini, chili sauce and cheese rolled inside the wrap.

While the recipes differ from country to country, the original meat marination, pickled vegetables and sauces remain the same.

What is the basic Caloric Count?

While the answer might differ depending on the ingredients and their quantity, a basic shawarma offers approximately 1,300 calories. It has almost 70 grams of fat and 2,300 mg of sodium.

What are popular Shawarma side dishes?

Shawarma is a filling meal on its own. However, some people prefer eating French fries, falafel and even fresh salad with it. To enhance the taste, you can also enjoy it with Tabbouleh (fresh salad made of finely chopped parsley, tomatoes, mint, etc).

I like my shawarma with a can of Coca cola and a single serving of French fries.

The best time to eat this dish?

Well, again, the answer might differ from person to person. If you ask me, shawarma is a hearty meal and it can be eaten for lunch or for dinner.

My husband usually brings shawarmas on his way home and we enjoy it as our midnight snack while binge watching Netflix!

Who invented Shawarma?

Surprisingly, shawarma dates back to the 18th century! Beat that. It was invented in Turkey and was initially served in Greece. People called it ‘gyro’, Greek word for a turn. However, once it spread across the Middle East, its name changed to shawarma. What a transition though!

Marvel Avengers and Shawarma

Believe it or not, Avengers introduced shawarma to all their fans in 2012. Interestingly, shawrma sales increased in 2012 after the feature film released globally.

Pizza hut offers unique flavors called ‘Shawarma’, Afghani Tikkha , BBQ Buzz and more. Nonetheless, Shawarma topping sounds totally out of this world and I’d love to enjoy it on my deep pan pizza crust.

What is the spice-o-meter of Shawarma?

I truly feel the spiciness can vary, but mainly since it has hummus, it is more on the creamy side. However, when I ask my favorite street vendor to make it, I ask him to add extra spices and pickles.

Can I make Shawarma at home?

Oh yes! It will be a plus if you have a rotisserie in your backyard. However, if not, you can simply make-do by grilling the chicken or any other meat. You’re your meat of choice is ready, simply load the pita bread with pickled veggies, hummus tahini and desired sauces.

Nonetheless, if you do not have hummus, you can always substitute it with mayonnaise garlic sauce.

10 Tips Straight From Professional Wedding Photographers

A wedding is a very precious occasion not just for the couple, but for the whole family. Hence, if you are one of the wedding photographers on board, you better know how to capture cool photos! After all, we all love digging up old wedding albums years later to show our children. They better be worth it.

Guess what? I have indulged in casual as well as professional photography too. I learnt photography from my father and oh boy! Is he a good self-taught photographer or what? Later, I also took workshops, online tutorials and gained experience after shooting with renowned photographers. Trust me when I say small little tips and tricks can take you a long way.

If you are a beginner or want new tricks up your sleeve, here are awesome tips from professional photographers.

Tip 1: Make a ‘Shot List’

This is one of the most helpful tips, especially for Pakistani Desi weddings. Ask the happy couple to create a list of poses, styles and shots they would want you to capture. Also, ask them about their family members and write down the important names for the big day wedding photography.

Additionally, go for a theme; create props beforehand to accentuate the photographs. Balloons, flowers, placards, rose petals and even lights can play a very nice role.

Tip 2: Visit the Location beforehand

If you are on the team of wedding photographers, you should definitely checkout the location prior to the event. Checking out the spots for nice photos, angles and lighting can help you on the wedding day.

Since there is limited time on the special day, knowing exactly which areas to leave out can come handy. Test shots can be tricky if the weather is bad or if there is a time crunch. So just do all this before the event.

Tip 3: Have backups

Anything can go wrong on the last minute. Hence, having backups can save you big time. Thus, keeping extra batteries, speed lights, memory cards and even camera lenses can be helpful.

In case you don’t have extras, just rent them for the day. Moreover, backups will also include plans. Have 2 locations and a variety of planned shots. You don’t want anything to hinder your final results.

Tip 4: Small details matter

All small details play a crucial role when wedding photography is in question. From the flowers to the back of the dresses, props, backdrop, food, the rings, even the smiles; all tiny details matter.

Most photographers in Pakistan don’t capture shots of small decorations, thinking they might not be important. However, maybe they are handmade and mean a lot to the bride. Think twice, and don’t leave out any detail.

For example, our Nikkah pens, bride’s dupatta, her jewelry, joota chupai and other important instances need to be captured.

Tip 5: Keep it Simple and Easy

The best advice I can give to beginner wedding photographers is to keep things simple, cool and easy. This goes for the angles, shots, equipment and especially the prices.

Stick to 2 basic lenses instead of keeping 5. Not being able to screw in the right one at the right moment will cause frustration. A 35mm-85mm (combo) prime lens and a 55-300 mm zoom lens will both help cover the whole shoot.

Tip 6: Practice is key

There is no science behind anything really but practice. Practice makes perfect. Try shooting random friends, family members and strangers before covering any wedding events. Moreover, try different angles, lighting, lenses, modes on your camera and different times of the day.

Tip 7: Assist a professional photographer

You have all heard about internships. Internships help us learn on-the-job under the supervision of a professional. Talk to a professional photographer and if he allows it, shadow him at different events and learn the common do’s and don’ts.

Further, discuss the things you didn’t get a hang of, and learn everything you possibly can.

Tip 8: Learn Post photography editing

I am a great photographer but sadly I’m not too great at editing. Similarly, most photographers take brilliant pictures, but in the end, ruin them with weird filters. Take a course about editing pictures on good software, practice and then offer your skills to the public.

Framing is one aspect most photographers just don’t know about. I have come across pictures with loose wires showing in the background or random people also being captured while taking a bite! I mean, why?

Tip 9: Discuss the Guest List

Newlyweds love seeing their friends and family members smiling, being happy and doing funny things together. Hence, try and get a guest list days before you shoot the actual event. Every wedding has cousins, uncles, aunts, chachis, grandparents, neighbors, colleagues and distant relatives. Learn about the important members and create a VIP list.

Offer portrait shots to the VIP guests and focus on them more than the less important, distant guests. Also, take at least 10 pictures of the couple with the parents in different reactions. Some can be formal and posed while others can be candid. Sadly, I have no picture with both my parents on my wedding day. Sigh!

Pakistani male wedding photographers have a dilemma of choosing a random girl from a desi wedding and filling the entire album with her pictures! Please avoid this.

Tip 10: Candid Shots are must

While formal pictures with perfect poses and bright smiles are awesome, candid pictures are totally incomparable. Try getting natural shots of the couple from different angles while they are smiling, crying with joy, are excited, etc. Also, get the couple’s sisters, brothers and parents’ candid shots.

Additionally, don’t forget to shoot the dances, selfies, bride’s entrance and the couple’s exit.

Pakistani Drama series are full of all sorts of emotions. Our industry is thriving and is producing remarkable plays than ever before. Whether you prefer action, romance, comedy, or mystery; we have it all!

If you haven’t had the chance to watch a Pakistani drama yet, here’s a list of the top ones for you to explore.

Alpha Bravo Charlie

Alpha Bravo Charlie is an ISPR production. Always living up to his name, Shoaib Mansoor did a flawless job directing this drama series. ABC dates back to May 1998 when I was only 7 years old. Woah! Additionally, you guys have no idea the kind of hype this show created.

The storyline revolves around 3 friends who want to join the Pakistan army. Eventually, they do. Afterward, interesting stories build and more characters jump in. It is a perfect blend of action, romance, friendship, and mystery.

Khuda ki Basti

A Pakistani drama series from 1969 starring Zaheen Tahira, Behroze Sabswari and Qazi Javed is still everyone’s favorite. A TV critic also stated and I quote, “This is one of the oldest and greatest dramas in the history of Pakistani television.”

If you want to dive into old Urdu productions, this should top the list.

Dhoop kinare

In Urdu, Dhoop Kinare means ‘the edge of Sunshine’. This teleplay aired in 1987 on PTV. Interestingly, the story was totally unique in its time as it revolved around a team of doctors in Karachi, their cases and their private lives. More or less Grey’s Anatomy in Urdu from the past!

Moreover, it only has 17 episodes. In case you want to watch a blast form the past, this could be a start.

Humsafar

Launching Mahira Khan and Fawad Khan to stardom in 2011, Humsafar rocked the whole world completely. Surprisingly, it is a typical love story with Saas trying to create a divide between her son and her daughter in law. However, Khirad’s simplicity and the door door se ankhon ka pyar took the cake.

Romance, jealousy, hatred and forgiveness; this teleplay tops my all time favorite Pakistani drama series. Moreover, its OST is hands down, super catchy. Quratuilain Baloch sang is beautifully.

Zindagi Gulzar hai

Sanam Saeed, Fawad Khan, and Mansha Pasha played this series impeccably. While Zindagi Gulzar hai is another rom-com cliché, nonetheless it made its cast popular not only in Pakistan but also in India.

A girl raised by her single mother meets a boy and doesn’t truly let him in, until she finds out that he is the one she loves.

Pyarey Afzal

Another serial I still haven’t watched but have heard only good things about. This is a Nadeem Baig production and Hamza Ali Abbasi, Aiza Khan, Saba Hamid, and Sana Javed cast side by side to make it a success.

Pyarey Afzal is written by Khaleel ur Rehman. With a name that big, you can well imagine how great it is already! The story tells us about a simple, flawed yet optimistic man named Afzal. His misfortune? He simply cannot express his feelings for the one he loves.

I won’t mention the ending because I don’t want to ruin it for you. Trust me; you will want to recommend to everyone after watching it!

Maat

OK. Here is one drama series on the list I have watched and I liked it. Interestingly, it was the most-watched drama creation in 2011 after Humsafar. In short, it is about how 2 sisters can be so different even though they are brought up in the same environment. The elder being mature, serious, and responsible, the younger is naïve, materialistic, and foolish.

When the younger one steals her sister’s fiancé simply because he is rich, they both soon find out how money has the power to change everything.

Alif Allah aur Insaan

A true depiction of how Allah rewards hard work, honesty and humbleness. Equally important, how our creator sins the people who are the opposite. It is a tale showing love, forgiveness, romance and faith.

This serial stars Mikaal Zulfiqar, Ushana Shah and Kubra Khan. It is a HUM.TV production and it aired in 2017.

Shehr-e-Zaat

It is directed by Sarmad Khoosat. Need I say more? Mahira Khan plays a role of a rich girl who is studying Fine Arts in college. She sculpts her way from the man of her dreams to finally becoming close to Allah. The storyline is great but above all, the direction of scenes is extra ordinary.

This beautiful drama aired in 2012. Mohib Mirza and Mikaal Zulifiqar acted wonderfully alongside Mahira Khan.

Zun mureed

Domestic violence is not acceptable under any circumstance. This Pakistani drama series highlighted this said issue. When the wife (Nadia Khan) starts working, (Omair Rana) the husband feels threatened and begins to torture her. Thus, she sends him to Jail.

Bin roye

Bin Roye is a textbook example of a flawless romantic direction. Surprisingly, Bin Roye showcased as a feature film in 2015 and then, upon its hype and love from the fans, it became a series in 2016.

It centers a young girl, her first love and a perfect Pakistani family household. However, when Humayun Saeed marries Saba’s sister, her whole world falls apart.

Ishq Zahe Naseeb

This Pakistani drama series is the best 2019 Momina duraid production. Moreover, it offers a completely different idea. It showcases loads of twits, secrets and interesting scenes to keep the audience captivated.

A simple poor girl ties the knot with a rich man, only to find out that he has a split personality. In short, the awesome acting performances by Zahid Ahmed and Sonya Hussyn made it brilliant.

Udaari

Making a drama series around a tabooed topic in 2016 is why Udaari was original and unique. The storyline is powerful and everyone’s acting skills are also super.

Ahsan Khan explored his talent by playing a negative character and the world fell in love with him. The story shows the urban as well as rural side of Pakistan, focusing on two families from opposite backgrounds.

Ranjha Ranjha Kardi

Bhoola is one name everyone remembers. In short, Imran Ashraf’s performance was award winning when he played a mentally challenged boy’s role. Noori (Iqra Aziz) is forced to marry him although she loves another. The story is interesting and different from the other dramas.

Alif

Alif is a series based on Umera Ahmed’s novel and is produced by Epic Entertainment. This drama series took social media by the storm because of its unique plot and everyone’s outstanding performance.

When a film-maker and a struggling actress meet, they both cross paths and understand the meaning of Alif; the first Urdu alphabet and look for Allah (God).

Damsa

Damsa is a groundbreaking drama series from 2019. It is one of my favorites. A young schoolgirl is kidnapped by a mafia begging ring. Clearly, the mother (Nadia Khan) does everything in her power to find her daughter but the father stops supporting her midway.

Damsa is a true depiction of a mother’s love. Above all, it shows ace acting skills and the plot is unique. It is a must watch if you can handle crime, sadness, heartbreak and forgiveness.

Dar si jaati hai Sila

A young girl (Yumna Zaidi) stays terrified most of the time because one of her male family members harasses her physically.

Khaas

I really liked this Pakistani drama series. Khaas shows a cute romantic, lighthearted story. A young, independent girl marries a rich boy but he keeps making fun of her. They split. Meanwhile, another man keeps supporting her and they eventually get married.

Belapur ki Dayan

A spirit returns from the afterlife to take revenge for her death. A nice horror flick, this drama series is my daughter Scharmayn’s favorite! After all, she recommended it.

From perfect Mehndi nights, dance routines to gorgeous lehngas and what not; everything is beautiful

Nonetheless, since the pandemic has become global and is nowhere near its end, nothing is being celebrated like before. Shopping, meetings, and even weddings have moved to a very small scale now.

Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir

Everyone was waiting for this star couple to tie the knot. And Yay! They married on March 14, 2020.

Hina Altaf is one of my favorite young actors on screen. She plays all her roles very nicely. On the other hand, Agha Ali acted very well in Dil-e-Gumshuda. In fact, the duo acted side by side in this drama series by 7^th Sky Entertainment.

Hina Altaf and Agha Ali had a small Nikkah ceremony with their family members on May 22, 2020. They both chose Jumma tul Widda for their blessed event.

Interestingly, all their fans were unaware of their relationship and their Nikkah pictures came as a pleasant surprise. They literally stormed the internet within minutes.

Later, Agha Ali posted a cute note saying that they both tied the knot quietly at home because of COVID-19 social distancing strict measures.

Shehroz Sabzwari weds Sadaf Kanwal

All former speculations were put to rest when the famous model Sadaf Kanwal and one of the renowned Pakistani celebs, Shahroze Sabswari decided to seal the deal. In fact, it was rumored that these two were having an intimate relationship when Shahroze was still married to Syra Yousaf.

True or not, what I’m happy about is that they chose to marry instead of being in an odd relationship out of wedlock. While the whole world is siding with Syra and sympathizing with her about the matter, I feel being single is much better than staying in a bad marriage.

Hence, coming back to the topic, Sadaf Kanwal and Shahroze Sabswari had a simple Nikkah at their house with just their parents and the Qari Sahab on May 31, 2020.

Sadaf draped a beautiful red and gold dupatta and put Tikki mehndi to complete her look. Likewise, Shahroze went for a simple look to by wearing a traditional white shalwar kameez.

Eman Suleman weds Syed Jamil Haider Rizvi

Our infamous model, Pakistani social activist and my townie; Eman Suleman married to her friend Jamil Haider Rizvi at a slightly better time when COVID-19 didn’t hit Pakistan as hard.

Interestingly, they both had a series of events in Lahore and had a spectacular wedding. Nonetheless, her outfits definitely weighed less than 20 kilos and she went for simpler looks by adding minimal accessories and makeup.

January 12^th, 2020 marks their special day. They both are currently residing in Pakistan and are happy together.

Pakistani Businesses that are thriving during COVID-19

There is no confusion in understanding that the global economy has suffered huge losses. And it is all because of the pandemic. Firstly, due to limited movement in the supply chains; the effect of these losses is felt right down to individual capacities. While one can argue that the economy has collapsed, there is, however, a silver lining.

There are Pakistani businesses that are managing to thrive despite the poor economic conditions. Here are the top ones.

Online classes and others

The Pakistani government was caught in the eye of the storm of COVID-19 just as it was opening its borders for more foreign direct investments. However, there were a few startups in fin-tech, educational, and healthcare sectors that were already operational before the pandemic. Moreover, they thrived on the good conditions long before it hit Pakistan.

Therefore, the need for these services rose due to social distancing measures. Startups like Sehat Kahani that provide telemedical services started flourishing. Online classes also began in full swing. From education to online therapy, online services are seeing a boom. MY daughter takes online classes too!

Courier and Delivery Services

Courier services like FedEx, TCS, and Leopard courier quickly paused their services. However, later they reviewed the situation and began delivering again. First, they adopted proper safety measures and developed appropriate standard operating procedures. Wearing masks, gloves, and sanitizing everything is a part of their daily protocol.

While social distancing stops retail services, many consumers have started to rely on online shopping via different online portals. Hence the rise in delivery via courier services. Once the Pakistani government allowed eateries to operate by take-away and delivery services only, you can well imagine how the delivery services began thriving!

Of course, there are many restaurants that deliver their products themselves but many rely on independent delivery services for food and other products.

The Construction Sector

The Pakistani government (2018-2023) promised 5 million houses and 10 million jobs to the public before getting elected. The idea was to create a favorable environment for everyone. Also, to mobilize the construction industry to the extent that both these promises get fulfilled. Nonetheless, COVID-19 changed all of that, and the construction of any sort totally stopped.

The government eventually introduced a tax scheme to attract investment in the sector. However, standard operating procedures were made clear.

The Construction Industry Development Board has made efforts to make the investment in this sector even more attractive and fruitful. There are some obvious beneficiaries of the revival of the construction industry. They include transporters of goods, producers of cement, iron, and steel, and providers of woodworks.

Home Catering

Most of you know that the Pakistani government has allowed restaurants and eateries to resume operations with standard operating procedures in place. Nevertheless, the brief shutdown of the food industry provided an opportunity for home catering startups. They provided home-cooked meals to reach a break-even point. Foods such as soups, burgers, pizzas, and biryanis are high in demand.

Why people cannot cook their own food right now is something I cannot understand. On the other hand, the costs of production have increased for all Pakistani businesses. Hence, the consumers simply pay extra prices for the convenience at their doorstep. Also, they can enjoy a wide array of cuisines.

As of now, this sector is still growing to reach maturity. It is a good opportunity to invest in the business right now and enjoy profits once it has established. It won’t take long in Lahore!

Pharmaceuticals And Healthcare Products

For a very very obvious reason, pharmaceuticals and healthcare products have seen an increase in their demand. Hence, a boost in production as well. Did you know huge companies like Johnson and Johnson have shifted their investments towards the development of a vaccine for COVID-19? Other smaller pharmaceutical businesses have shifted their production towards a more COVID19 appropriate schedule too.

There is an extreme increase in the demand for face-masks, sanitizers, handwashes, and antiseptic solutions. PPE kits are also among other products that might not have the cure for COVID19 but, are equally important in avoiding it.

Just recently, the government has allowed Pakistani businesses to export PPE kits and KN95 masks since the requirements of the country have fulfilled. This is an opportunity for businesses that produce these products to export them to countries that have a shortage. Also, they will be happy to import them at very good prices.

While these and some other sectors are experiencing rises in their revenues, there are many who need government or even global interventions to get them back on their feet again. Let’s hope for the best.

In a male chauvinist country, women often forego simple pleasures in life such as playing cricket in public, dancing, or even cycling. However, with the increasing exposure and leniency in the coming generations, today, girls can enjoy cycling as much as boys.

I see cute couples with matching outfits cycling in our colony. Just seeing them smile from afar is so satisfactory. Additionally, I see groups of young girls cycling near the parks while their mothers supervise. It is nice to see this change in our society.

Perk up your navigation skills

I am basically from Islamabad and shifting to Lahore made me realize memorizing routes is not so easy. For this purpose, I started driving around the city, and today, I am okayish when it comes to reaching a destination. Hence, you can well imagine how cycling can improve your navigational skills!

With Google maps available, no one has enough incentive to explore places on their own. Also, no one has so much free time. Nonetheless, try taking new routes, see new places, and feel the amazing sense of achievement. After all, we all have time on our hands. It’s the small things that matter!

University of Management and Technology (UMT)

Next in our list, UMT is a school that helps students discover academics with an open mind. Moreover, a place where experienced faculty and students join; UMT is the right place for studies.

King Edward Medical University

If you are a Pakistani Drama junkie, you will agree that sometimes the storylines, plots, even the actors are the same. Moreover, other times, you just want to dive into another culture and watch something intriguing. This is where the Turkish Drama Series come in.

The Turkish dramas swept everyone off their feet at first glance with their unique store themes and striking locations. Additionally, Pakistanis totally fell in love with actors like ‘Behlul’ aka Kivanç Tatlitug and ‘Bihter’, Beren Saat. Oh yes! I know you’ve heard of them too.

Interestingly, everyone can enjoy the serials effortlessly since they are dubbed in Urdu. So without further ado, here’s a list of the top Turkish soaps you should add to your watch-list soon.

Diriliş: Ertuğrul (Turkish Drama Series)

Currently highest grossing serial in Pakistan, our people cannot stop calling ‘Hamza Ali Abbasi and his wife Naimal Khan’ the ideal candidates as lead characters if there would be a Pakistani remake!

In particular, this may come as a shock to you all, but our Prime minister Imran Khan recommended this serial to all the Pakistani masses a few weeks ago. Why so? Mainly because it adequately removes the negative stereotypes as well as many misconceptions about Islam and Muslims spread across the globe today.

Further, highlighting the Muslim Oghuz Turks fighting and taking over Mongols and Christian Byzantines, Mehmet Bozdağ did an astounding job creating an ideal drama series displaying the Ottoman Empire profoundly.

Apparently, die-hard fans call this serial the ‘Turkish Game of Thrones’ as it is a blend of love, betrayal, death and a true depiction of action-packed adventure. Besides, if you wish to submerge into the realm of Turkish history visually, nothing shows it better than this. Go watch it now!

Ishq e Mamnoon

An adaption of the novel Aşk-ı Memnu written by Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil, this soap reveals a story about forbidden love between two adults. How the story develops, takes a turn and how twists keep adding are the reasons why it is so interesting to watch.

Since I’ve relished watching it with my Daadi, I will give it a score of 8/10, taking all the Pakistani dramas and their storylines into account. Equally important, I bet you will crush on ‘Behlul’ for sure, just like the rest of us.

Pyar Lafzon mein Kahan

A love story that commences from an office setting leading to the core of the heart. This rom-com is a perfect treat for the eyes! It is lighthearted, sweet, and easy to watch.

Jan

One of my 5 year old’s favorite, Jan is a Turkish drama series all children should watch. This cartoon is the perfect depiction of a typical Muslim family comprising of parents, siblings and grandparents. Equally important, the way each episode brings a unique plot with a cute moral is totally adorable.

If you have children under 10 years of age, you should definitely download Jan.

Muhafiz: The Protector

With an 8.5 IMDB rating, this Turkish drama series concerns a young local shopkeeper leading his normal life, until he discovers he has an immortal enemy from the Ancient times. To his surprise, he is the chosen protector.

Now, he must defend Istanbul from the horrifying mystical powers. However, what will he do with his newfound love in the current world?

20 dakika

If typical love stories are taking a toll on you, here’s a new option on the table for you all. 20 Dakika, or ‘20 Minutes’ is not everyone’s cup of tea. In sum, a loving husband is forced to face the dangers of the justice system when he tries to prove his wife innocent for a murder she did not commit.

Consequently, this Turkish drama series is packed with action, drama and pure love.

Shahrzad

Depicting Iran 1950’s style where alcohol flows, cabarets are fancied and both sexes mingle freely; Shahrzad will have you glued on the screen every time you watch an episode. With this in mind, you experience the whole series through the eyes of Shahrzad and witness an uproarious narrative. To summarize, the story during Pahlavi Iran includes not only love and death but also birth and divorce. Moreover, it also includes crime, justice, and class differences.

Mera Sultan

Mera Sultan aired in 2011 and took the world by storm. Firstly, the costume-drama is so perfectly showcased, enveloping historical fiction, romance, and war. Secondly, this soap taught our new generation about the longest-reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire nicely. ‘Suleyman the Magnificent and his wife Hurrem’ were shown in a wonderful way.

Minahil aur Khalil

The story unfolds about two friends falling in love, only to lose each other later. Apparently, Minahil’s father marries her off to the villain in exchange for a hefty amount. Now Khalil must do something to keep the love alive, even if it’s from afar.

If you are seeking a scary flick to put a chill through your spine, ask me! Above all, horror is the genre I master (apart from romance). Thanks to experienced directors like James Wan and Mike Flanagan who have upped the ante of horror flicks, we can actually turn our dreams into nightmares! Moreover, I’m so glad Netflix offers a cool variety of horror shows, making trips down memory lane through childhood movies effortless. From meat-munching creatures to creepy serial killers, to indie stories of repulsion and evil forces from the dark side; whatever style you are in the mood for, Netflix will satiate your movie craving.

Indeed, from legendary spooks to the zombie apocalypse and cult favorites, here’s a list I put together for you all after a thorough digital grunt work. Enjoy!

Atmospheric Suspense

Gerald’s Game (2017)

Woah! One of my favorites, Gerald’s Game is one panic-striking movie that goes from a romantic 10/10 to a scary 8/10 within minutes. Starring Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood, this creepy-dreamy slow burn is a feast for the eyes.

Interestingly, the story revolves around the couple taking a romantic escape to a lake-house where the husband’s sex game takes an awful turn. The wife, handcuffed to the bed must do something on her own to survive. It’s awesome. Go watch it!

In the Tall Grass (2019)

In particular, one of the recent additions to the Netflix horror library, this impeccably constructed adaption of Stephen King’s and his son, Joe Hill’s novel is a dark sinister flick. When innocent by-passers are lured in a maze-like cornfield upon hearing painful screams, their escape becomes arduous.

Further, using the premise for the maximum spine-chilling effect, what happens in the field must stay in the field! One of the scariest films on Netflix for sure.

Deliver us from Evil (2014)

Dive into the realm of believable supernatural flicks! Starring Eric Bana, this suspenseful thriller is a blend of horror and action scenes. Interestingly, based on genuine accounts of NYPD Sergeant Ralph Sarchie, this New York police officer teams up with a priest to investigate crimes, believing a demonic presence is behind it all.

The Ritual (2017)

The ritual follows Rafe Spall into an atmospheric journey through the Swedish woods with 3 long-lost friends. In particular, after spending a night inside a scary abandoned cabin with a freaky religious icon, the rest of the journey continues trying to flee the area. But first, they have to beat demons; their own, and of other nature.

A Quiet Place (2018)

The name says it all! Imagine not being able to make the faintest of sound if you want to see tomorrow. In short, this film revolves around a post-apocalyptic world where horrendous monstrosities invade the earth and hunt living things to death. Their superpower? Awesome hearing!

John Krasinski’s first horror creation, starring alongside his wife Emily Blunt is an epic horror feature that actually reveals how loud humans can be. From footsteps to opening doors; this family has to stay mute to survive.

The Legendary/Classic Horror Flicks

Firstly, nothing beats watching the cult favorites passed on from generation to generation. Check out my favorites which are available on Netflix.

The Conjuring (2013)

Directed by James Wan, this scary film showcases supernatural activity haunting the Perron family, disturbing them to the core. Consequently, juggling between how the church doesn’t believe their demonic experiences to consulting famous demonologists, this film is the perfect family horror movie.

Texas Chainsaw (2013)

Surprisingly, the famous gory horror flick in the saga of Leatherface was a hit at the box office back then. Chainsaw being the villain’s roscoe, when a woman visits Texas to claim her inheritance, she uncovers he is part of the legacy!

Poltergeist (1982)

Significantly, one of the highest-grossing movies from 1982, this suspenseful classic took scare-fest to a whole new level. Apparently, a spiteful spirit from hell invades a middle-class family’s home and eyes an innocent girl for possession and destruction.

Friday the 13^th(2009)

This cult classic is a film not to be missed if you are a fan of the horror and gory. In sum, this flick features ‘Jason Voorhees’ the masked camp cook-turned-murderer from 1980. Equally important, he is infamous for brutally killing all his victims at Crystal Lake. He should definitely be witnessed on-screen! Moreover, Jason never misses a single one of his prey, making all the remakes totally worth the watch.

To summarize, when a group of collegians arrive at the scene, they confront the renowned homicidal lunatic. Everyone attempts to hide, wondering who will fall victim next.

Teen Horror Flicks

Veronica (2017)

Amazingly, viewers claimed that Veronica was so terrifying that they couldn’t watch till the climax! However, I can’t personally vouch for this one but I’ve heard good things about it. It’s definitely on my movie bucket list.

Apparently, when a teen tries to communicate with the spirits using an Ouija board, things take a u-turn. Clearly, the evil demons arrive, psychologically horrifying everyone in the apartment.

Hush (2016)

Totally enthralling, Hush is a suspenseful thriller worth watching. In short, a masked killer appears on every window to kill the girl in the house. Thus, strategically trying to saves herself is one mystery you guys should watch. Twist? The writer is deaf and retreated in the woods, alone!

Rural Pakistan has taken over TikTok completely in 2020

Pakistan TikTok has become a searing sensation that is gripping the entire nation with an astounding 16.3 million users from January 2019 to November 2019. Beat that!

Pakistan TikTok being thrust into the limelight through controversies.

The app is famous, and don’t we all know it. 2018 was the year when TikTok gained the spotlight globally and hasn’t stopped since. However, you know how sometimes the attempt to withhold something, makes it THAT much more enticing and juicy? Especially, in the case of Pakistan TikTok, I feel this has been overwhelmingly the case.

It’s pure and simple entertainment. But, attempts to bring it’s supposed ‘Behayaa’ elements by the mullah minds have thrust it further into the limelight. For once, I would like to request these religious-minded people to back-off. TikTok provides comic relief in a time that is fraught with stress.

Its fun

In short, this is a literal rendition of the age-old adage; if you try to stop something, it spreads like wildfire! As my 5-year-old daughter likes to say and I quote, “Take a chill pill!”.

A major plus point – it’s available to all!

The app is popular across the globe but, have you ever stopped to ponder why? There are so many apps on the internet, but there are very few which rise up the fame ladder in the manner TikTok has been able to do. Incidentally, one explanation really strikes the right chords.

The director of BoloBhi, (a civil organization which serves to look after digital rights in Pakistan), Usama Khilji said; “It is accessible to everyone. This is in contrast to other social media platforms which require a person to be literate, and are somewhat considered elitist.”

Usama Khiljis’ comments have really nailed the explanation. Really, it is one app that has helped so many common people rise to fame, based purely on their talents. For those of us who vie to make it big, but do not have the resources or the exposure/contacts to do so can look towards this platform. It is a huge opportunity in itself.

Catering everyone

Not only does TikTok cater to people from all walks of life in terms of social and educational backgrounds, but it is also an app that has accomplished the impossible feat of attracting users hailing from almost all age groups. Of course, the younger lot is a lot more than elder participants. The Global Web Index of 2019 found that around 41 percent of TikTok users were between 16 to 24 years of age.

Of course, the aam people are abundant on the Pakistan TikTok scene. Nonetheless, a testament to its ever-increasing popularity is the mere number of celebrities who are also joining in! Why would anyone want to miss out on the fun?

TikTok seems like a natural place for all the celebs to be. After all, it allows them to showcase the entire versatile portfolio of their skills. While our local favorites like Mehwish Hayat and Fahad Mustafa have their audiences completely captivated through their videos, rockers around the world aren’t holding back either. Surprisingly, Coldplay is also familiarizing with social media interaction during Covid19 lockdowns.

TikTok Challenges which have us enthralled

Perhaps one of the most engaging features on TikTok are the challenges. These challenges are usually a sequence of dance moves. Once they have been put out by the original user, others attempt to replicate it. Suffice to say, these are never easy!

But it can be tough, particularly in the present circumstances. The lockdown has affected some of the world’s healthiest, strongest, and fit people. This includes, of course, every Pakistani and Indian woman’s fit benchmark, Malaika Arora.

Malaika has by far the most followed fitness and lifestyle celebrity from the subcontinent, with millions of fans across the subcontinent following her on Instagram and her other social media pages.

But how exactly do superfit celebrities like Malaika differ from people like you and me? They stop making excuses and get off their butts, for one.

While being physically healthy and owning good looks has always been fairly essential, it has truly become a necessity in this day and age. If you choose to be a couch potato while trying innovative recipes, not only will you become super lazy but will also gain the not-so-needed extra pounds.

Believe it or not, doing household chores isn’t as mundane and exhausting as you would have it. Something as simple as cooking can help you stay active and burn calories. Not only are you standing for minutes (sometimes hours) but you use your arm muscles and brain while steering the ship in the kitchen.

What if you want something more challenging? Well, you can always start mopping the floor. Try using a flat, microfiber towel by rubbing it back and forth while firmly sitting in a squat position. If you think a minute goes by too quickly, try this, and every second will count!

Jokes apart, this exercise is tried and tested by your truly, and trust me when I say that my legs literally feel as strong as Wonder-woman today!

These squats will help strengthen your quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves. If you want that Malaika Arora bod, you better get working on those quads and hamstrings!

Moreover, this exercise will get you warmed up, creating an ideal anabolic environment (building muscle mass). Perfect for fitting into your old pants within days, eh! Do this at least 5 times a week and flaunt the results all over social media.

COVID-19 is as worrying as it can be and the main purpose behind this blog is to help keep you occupied in healthy activities rather than stress you further.

Celebrities like Malaika Arora swear by these holds. Never tried them? Here’s what to do.

Follow these instructions: 1. Lie down on your back on the floor. Keep your arms on the sides and legs bent upwards. Draw your belly button in, pressing the back into the floor as much as you can. Slowly lift your shoulder off the floor, allowing the abs to contract and the spine to lengthen. Hold this position for at least 40 seconds and release. Continue indulging in this simple exercise 5 times or more daily. I usually do this while binging Netflix.

Staircase is ideal for leg workouts

Not a fan of leg workout? I can totally relate. I hate it too! But we cannot let our legs become fat, frail, and chubby. You would be hardpressed to find an Instagram influencer without great quad muscles. For these reasons, the stairs are the best option to choose when we cannot hit the gym. Since everyone has stairs at home, this tip is pretty easy to follow.

Simply climb up and down the stairs at least 20 times a day and notice awesome results within a week. In case you live on a single floor, take a foot stool, climb up and down 50 times, completing 3 sets, making the total count 150. You will love the feeling. Moreover, if you live in an apartment building, choose stairs over the elevator.

Keep Meal Time and Work separate

Eating a scrumptious cheese sandwich for lunch is too easy when you are simultaneously checking your office emails. While it might seem like healthy multitasking, in reality, it just isn’t. Why do you ask? Well, because stress and tension affect our digestive system. Hence, when we are in fight-or-flight mode, our body shifts blood from the gut to all the working muscles, especially our brain. This does not make our digestive process quick or friendly.

Thereby, it is ideal to eat while seated in a relaxed healthy environment, preferably sitting next to your family. Also, being mindful of our eating and chewing without unnecessary distractions is a key heuristic toward good health. Hence, stay fit during COVID-19 lockdown by keeping both these activities separate.

Move your arms like Malaika Arora for upper body strength

Most ladies, like me, tend to pile on fat around the triceps and biceps. God knows how hard it is to get rid of it. Hence, if you are already familiar with the awesome arm rotations to lose the arm junk, do them. If not, check out an easy arm workout tutorial (without weights) and follow it step by step.

Age should not be a factor. Malaika is 46 and has arms that would make any 20-year old envious.

If you are not as tech-savvy as some, don’t fret. I have a tip for you, too. Just put on your favorite music (Latin pop and Reggaeton work best for me), and stretch your arms to the side, flexing them up and down, left, right and center. Simply flow to the rhythm and move your arms in all directions at different speeds. My favorites are triceps extensions, triceps dips, arm circles, and push-backs. What’s the fun in that? Instead of focusing on survival and how to tackle COVID-19 lockdown, look on the bright side and find cool opportunities, and pursue them. Yes, times will become harder. Yes, the lockdown might turn into curfew too. However, in order to stay sane, trying something new once in a while is necessary.

Always wanted to paint? Go paint. Do you love foreign languages? Take an online course and learn a language. Laugh, dance, take online courses, or start teaching online. Just have fun with your life and do what you always wanted to do and couldn’t find time for.

Stay Productive And Mentally Active

‘An empty mind is a devil’s workshop’ is true to the core. Our brain needs a healthy workout in these tough times more than our bodies.

One way would be to work from your home just as you do at the office. Sit on a makeshift work table and set standard work hours for yourself.

Not doing a 9-to-5 job in your regular life? Start writing.

Jotting down your thoughts, ideas, plans for the future, or writing jokes, poems, or stories from the past can help you heal. In short, the act of writing can help unlock your feelings, enabling you to begin a much-needed conversation, throwing light on aspects you never thought you could put into words.

Merely keep a small diary or a journal with you, take out an hour to write, doodle, and express your inner thoughts. Share it with your friends on social media or keep it a secret. The choice is yours.

Breathe Right, Live Right

We all start breathing as soon as we step into this world. We have been breathing since! Weird when you think like that. Anyhow, the fact is that we are all too fast. We live our lives too fast. We eat fast. Breathe fast. Meditate. In order to master the art of living, one needs to learn how to breathe like a baby.

Diaphragmatic breathing plays a crucial role. Slowly inhaling, allowing more air to enter our lungs helps our breathing pattern overall. Indulging for 5 minutes daily will help you in the long run.

Follow these instructions:

Sit straight or lie down on the floor
Relax your shoulders
Ease into the space around you
Put one hand on your chest and the other below the rib cage
Breathe in slowly through the nose, feeling your stomach expand
Hold it for as long as you can
Breathe out slowly through your mouth, feeling your stomach contract
Repeat

Life as we have known it will never be the same thanks to COVID-19. Social distancing powered by government lockdowns will have deep-rooted effects on everyone in the coming years, and it will take more than just a few years for things to get back to how they were – even if we come up with a potent vaccine this in 2020.

Like every industry; the music industry is suffering as well. Sales of physical albums had already plummeted due to an exponential rise in the quantity of free content available online. P2P software played their part and here we are; in a post COVID-19 world, where like many other industries, the music industry too; has collapsed.

Today, keeping Rock n’ Roll, Metal, and their sub-genres in mind, I’ll choose to debase the phrase we have all heard of in the last two decades about every other day, “ROCK IS DEAD”. Why? Simply because we see artists from these very genres thriving, touring, interacting with a very wide and diverse set of fans all the time. In comes Covid-19 and bam!

Besides, it would be interesting to see how the underdogs of the current music scene are surviving, now that their foremost source of income (Concerts and Tours) has ceased to exist.

CONCERTS

Concerts were one of the first events to get postponed and canceled along with sporting events when COVID-19 began to spread exponentially in Europe. Significantly, fans were heartbroken when they got to know that they won’t be able to witness their favorite band perform live. TOOL, KISS, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and DEVIN TOWNSEND were among the first performers to cancel their tours.

While this move was necessary; it absolutely destroyed the financial side of things for these artists. However, the show must go on and the rockers made sure that it does. Interestingly, they adapted quickly and transposed their acts for an online situation.

While people like DAVE GROHL got together with BBCRADIO and an ensemble of artistes to reproduce one of their hits, people like DEVIN TOWNSEND started performing as a one-band with backing tracks for a charitable cause. He and other artistes use Live stream as a mechanism to engage a global audience with their music, while serving noble causes.

Moreover, bands including THE ROLLING STONES, SAMMY HAGAR AND THE CIRCLE, INCUBUS and QUEEN among many others jam online in front of an online audience. Some choose to do it for charitable causes while others prefer sending out good vibes. How cool is that?

Ever since the availability of music was made online; record labels have seen a continuous downward slope in terms of sales. Most artistes used to rely on heavy touring and VIP meet and greet events to generate a sizeable income. For obvious reasons; that cannot happen anymore.

That still does not quench the thirst of our favorite rockers of inspiring and getting inspired by their fans. For some, fan interaction is a must and bands have been speedy in figuring out an easier, more convenient way to interact with their fanbase. LIVESTREAM interactions! Many rockers have taken it up to their socials including Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and Facebook to intermingle with their fans.

Interestingly, people like CHRIS MARTIN from COLDPLAY popped their cherry in terms of online fan interactions after COVID-19. He played songs on people’s requests including a DAVID BOWIE cover as well. People like NEIL DIAMOND and NEIL YOUNG have also resurfaced and interacted by playing for fans online. Who knew they would resort to this one day?

Local Artists singing for Peace

Pakistani local favorites like Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam, Ali Sethi, and others are also contributing in these traumatic times. Ali Zafar just launched a new cover of the song ‘Faryad’, originally sung by Mangesh Karlata. He hopes it gives peace to everyone’s ears during these hard times.

Equally important, bands including IRON MAIDEN, METALLICA, MEGADETH, DEFTONES, MASTODON and various others have enjoyed a steep upward curve of sales of their branded liquor. People have been ordering their favorite band’s beer by the gallons to spend their time in a much relaxed manner during lockdowns. I mean, lockdowns can have a positive side to them too, eh!

NETWORK APPEARANCES

One of the most important appearances for any artist from any genre is to become visible on a late night talk show on TV. Famous shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and CONAN have huge fan-bases across the globe and it just makes sense that you take your latest product to these shows and showcase in front the world. However, most of these shows have abandoned their studio sets and have actually shifted to a more socially distant setup. Yes, it is mostly the host’s home with minimalistic or no crew at all.

How is that anything between a rocker and a global audience? THOME YORKE from RADIOHEAD joined The Tonight Show online and played one of his new tunes on the piano. I loved it! Likewise, other artistes join other hosts during their shows for a live performance and rock the hell out of everyone!

Rishi Kapoor, the iconic veteran actor, breathed his last on April 30, 2020. Death is, unfortunately, a sad reality of life and all of us must embrace it at some time. While he may have suddenly left us all, that definitely is no reason to forget him or to stop celebrating his accomplishments.

Unlike others in Kapoor family, Rishi Kapoor began his career in his adolescence. Interestingly, he won the National film award for the ‘Best Child Artist’ for his first film. I mean, wow! Then came along amazing Bollywood movies and almost all of them have left a lasting impression on us. Furthermore, perhaps one of the most appreciable traits of his character was the way he was able to seamlessly adapt to the role he was playing.

Behold Rishi Kapoor fans. Here’s taking a trip down memory lane and sending love and prayers to the dearly departed.

Hum Tum Ek Kamray Main Band Houn!

Rishi Kapoor entertained the masses for decades, generation over generation with this song and it still has not lost its charm. Rishi Kapoor started his career with a heartrending performance as Raju in Mera Naam Joker. The 5-hour film is considered one of the most storied in Bollywood history. Interestingly, it wasn’t as initially well-received as one might have thought. Critics complained about the length of the movie and the plot which was largely experimental. It went on to become a commercial failure.

However, like the pearl that comes out of its shell polished, bright, and shiny, the movie later came to be hailed as a cult classic. It is also considered as one of the best performances given by Rishi Kapoor. Given, the astounding performances he has delivered throughout his career, that’s definitely saying something. Now, this movie will be cherished even more.

Do Dooni Chaar

Perhaps the most memorable thing about Do Dooni Chaar is the fact that Rishi Kapoor and Neeti Kapoor came together as an on-screen couple after about three decades. It was really cool! Needless to say, the fans swooned. The storyline was immensely relatable. Who here does not want to strive in every way possible in order to provide their family with a better life?

The character played by Rishi Kapoor in this film follows the struggle of a mathematics teacher, to ensure his family is able to live a better life. Further, it also shows the evils that can befall a person who tries to live beyond his means. In the movie, crooks who believe that grades can be bought to target the teacher. An amazing movie that kept the attention of the audience entrapped until the very last minute.

Kapoor & Sons

Kapoor & Sons just ticks all the right boxes for me! Not only is the cast truly impeccable, but the characters assigned to each task are just perfect. From Alia Bhatt playing the part of a carefree young girl, to seeing Rishi Kapoor in prosthetics for the second time in his life, What a film it was! Moreover, for the second time in his life, he truly nailed it!

The movie hinged on bittersweet nostalgia, showing the perfection of an imperfect family. It is one of the movies which can be seen again and again without being bored. Too much drama, I tell you.

Agneepath

Agneepath is a tribute to the inherent versatility that Rishi Kapoor has displayed in his acting. The stellar performance cast him in the role of a tyrant. I for one could never have imagined that an actor with the appearance of a cuddly uncle could have forged so seamlessly with an evil role.

Moreover in my opinion, Rishi Kapoor definitely added hundreds of names to his huge fan base by playing the perfect villainous act. His kohl-lined eyes, the traditional ‘Bhai log’ choker, and his rugged shalwar kameez totally stole the show. However, his expressions were exemplary as they totally dripped venom. This particular performance of his proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, that he can take up any role he sets his mind to.

His Bond with Karishma Kapoor

It might sound like a weird thing to miss. Nonetheless, it was extremely difficult to digest the passing of ‘Chintu jee’ for the whole Kapoor clan. Believe it or not, Karishma Kapoor was very close to her uncle. Pictures posted on social media by Karishma Kapoor reminiscing about the way Rishi Kapoor being a constant and loving presence in her life, strikes chords of wistfulness now.

Now that he is gone, there will be a gaping hole, making us all miss Rishi Kapoor and his adorable pictures with his niece. Lovingly called ‘Chintu uncle’, his mere existence was cherished by his loved ones.

His Wholesome Presence

Rishi Kapoor was loved by millions. What is truly amazing is that people from all over the Bollywood industry as well as the Pakistani media industry are now withering away in remorse at his passing. The ways in which his memories are being recalled by many of his colleagues and acquaintances makes it evident that he was loved by all who knew him.

His Thumkas

Bollywood is an industry that is fraught with dances at every turn. Rarely, if at all, will a movie be produced this doesn’t have dances included in one manner or the other. Even the most somber of storylines will incorporate dances in some sneaky way.

When it came to dancing, Rishi Kapoor managed to always provide an endearing performance. This was true all through his youth, right till his end. The way he danced, his composure and his moves will always bring smiles on the faces of his fans. And isn’t that just what every actor desires?

Despite his age, he delivered performances that would put much of the younger lot to shame. All this, done in a way which belied any vulgarity, any cause to grimace at all.

Sense of Humor

Rarely do people have a sense of humor that is so tasteful that others are bound to take heed. Till his last days at the hospital, his sense of humor kept those around him entertained, which speaks volumes about the kind of person he was. Even when he was uncomfortable, pumped with drugs, and losing the long-drawn battle to cancer, he did not succumb to a manner that would make his caretakers suffer. How many of us can honestly say we are capable of doing something like that? Rishi Kapoor was a legend.

India and Pakistan are rarely ever on the same page. There are political tensions, border issues, and what not. In the midst of all this, not even the stars and actors are spared. They too become entangled in the mesh that is secularism. Rishi Kapoor remained a staunch vocal supporter of the Indian Army during his last years on twitter.

Nonetheless, there are still many artifacts which pay homage to the fact that the countries have bonds which cannot be severed so easily. This picture of a young Rishi Kapoor standing outside the vast and expansive Kapoor Haveli in Peshawar is a testament to sweeter times. There are talks of now converting this haveli to a museum in an effort to preserve it.

Bollywood actors, in fact actors all over the world would do very well to take a leaf out of his book. He has left this world. Yes. But, through the journey of his life, he has also scattered various pearls of wisdom through his demeanor, his personality, his life.

Dabbe: The Possession Is Terrifying Pakistanis On Netflix

Turkish film Dabbe: The Possession has taken Pakistan by storm. COVID-19 has led to millions flocking Netflix for some much needed escape from the horrors of real life. One way many choose to do this, naturally, is by watching hair-rising horror flicks. At present, the Netflix library in Pakistan (and other nations across South Asia and the Middle East) is relatively limited in both variety as well as quality.

We wouldn’t be surprised if you managed to watch every reasonably rated horror film on Netflix in the last month. This leads us to introduce you to one of the hidden gems on Netflix Pakistan. We are talking about the Turkish horror film series, Dabbe (d@bbe).

The series just might be ‘perfect’ horror for Pakistanis, South Asians and Muslims in general. For one, it delves into the jinn mythology (or reality as we prefer to label) rather than the apparition / ghost framework that defines most Hollywood flicks. If you enjoy demon infestation and excorcism films that Hollywood makes every now and then, you will be in love with Dabbe!

Netflix currently has 3 of the 6 films in the series. Luckily, Dabbe 3 and Dabbe 5 are widely considered as the best films in the series, and are available for your viewing ‘pleasure’. Most of the talk on social media has revolved around Dabbe: The Possession, which has amassed a cult following on the internet since its release.

Let’s look deeper into what makes Dabbe: The Possession (and the series as a whole) tick for viewers like us.

Djinns and Religious Inspiration

The director, Hasan Karacadag takes full luxury in adding his own spin to Islamic traditions and post-Islamic mythologies surrounding djinns. To make his end product more relevant for potential foreign viewers, he also adds elements from Christian demonology. The effect is obvious; D@bbe builds it’s legitimacy by banking on beliefs that billions of people around the world hold true.

Black Magic and Familial Animosities

D@bbe films glues viewers together through complex stories of revenge, hatred and pain that merge characters with their pasts. Each Dabbe film uses a common theme: the use of black magic in inflicting extreme pain. For those who have grown up in Pakistan, India or Bangladesh, this is a common theme you here so often. Undoubtedly, black magic and superstition go hand-in-hand as a part of the desi experience of growing up.

Turkish Subculture

Turkish Village — Turkish village from Dabbe: The Possession

There is no doubting that Turkish culture has continued to challenge India as the entertainment source with the most influence over Pakistanis.

Dabbe shows us a side of Turkey very few have seen on their visit to the beautiful country. It employs imagery and settings such as secluded villages to luxury suburban villas; the film’s setting is relatable yet distant.

If you have ever gone off the beaten track during your visit to Turkey and managed to see such destinations, Dabbe: The Possession will be a nostalgic (albeit terrifying) treat.

Rationality vs. Faith

This is perhaps D@bbe’s USP (unique selling proposition. The film has a rather intelligent take on faith and the ongoing struggle with rationality. Dabbe 3 and 6 in particular explore the struggle between the psychiatric sciences against the phenomenon of ‘possession’. Unsurprisingly, with this being a horror film, superstition supersedes skepticism in the end. Considering how rigid and condescending these more rationalist characters are, the viewer almost begs for this.

The Verdict

Go to any movie review site where Dabbe: The Possession is listed. Without exception, a sizeable number of reviewers will rank the film as one of the scariest they have ever seen. This is not a coincidence. The film takes the concept of black magic, voodoo and revenge to a whole new level by mixing them with Islamic concepts of djinns.

Nevertheless, we must warn you that the films do suffer from poor graphics. This is understandable considering the low budget as well as the director’s idiosyncratic editing style. Hasan Karacadag has a tendency to take a perfect horror setting and attempt to spice it up by mixing in hand-cam and CCTV footage alongsidean array of B-grade horror devices (filters, disorienting cuts and special effects).

This app is truly a blessing. Why? Because it allows video calls to multiple people simultaneously. Call your sisters, brothers, cousins, friends, or everyone at once! Amidst the laughter, the teasing, the shouting, and the gossip, you literally will not know how much time has gone by. Talking to those we love, seeing them, and interacting with them will almost make you feel as if they are right there with you. The lighthearted banter will surely lift up your spirits.

Moreover, it is also incredibly useful when official meetings are concerned. With Zoom, not only are official meetings easier, convenient, and cost-effective but the user-friendly interface is what I like the most Other than that, Zoom is ideal for online therapy sessions too. Ideally, you don’t even have to put a halt on your child’s education. Zoom with the teacher, add a few more class-fellows to the call and you are good to go!

Last Day on Earth: Survival

This app is bound to get you hooked. My husband plays this allllll the time! Last Day On Earth: Survival is a survival shooter game set in a post-zombie-apocalypse world after the year 2027 (When the virus outbreak actually happens). It is one of the best games out there to play during COVID19 lockdowns as it is extensively time-consuming.

Moreover, it manages to keep the end-user interested via Single Player and Multi-player interfaces which allow one to incorporate a wide array of both Melee weapons and Firearms to deal with the infected. Additionally, the player stays super engaged while building the base to keep himself safe from the zombies, raiders, and other users (who might visit your base and steal your valuable belongings).

It is a definite must-have app as it is not only extremely entertaining but it also polishes your survival skills, (as far as the thought process goes, at least!) You will find an almost unlimited amount of challenges to keep you busy and safe at home.

Tik Tok

As cliché as it sounds, TikTok deserved a mention! This is one app, I am pretty sure everyone has heard of. I mean, ‘Famous’ is TikTok’s middle name! Even the pandemic couldn’t change its fate.

Believe it or not, it saw a considerable surge in the number of users once lockdowns were enforced in various countries. Most celebs use this app too, maybe that’s why there is hype. I think I need to try it now. (If my hubby allows it- he kind of hates it). Why? Because it does have certain connotations of being vulgar, nonetheless, I truly believe that the way we use it is in our own hands.

For instance, celebrities like Gordon Ramsey are putting out videos that they have made with other family members. The videos are fun, entertaining, and lighthearted. So basically, fun for the entire family! The app gives an opportunity to make videos up to a maximum length of 15 seconds. In the video, the user can dance, sing, lip-sync, or attempt various challenges that are trending across the internet. All in all, it is an amazing app to kill time during the incredibly long lockdown days.

Houseparty

Well, a Houseparty is exactly what we all need at the moment. And, my friends, with the app, it’s what we are promised too! This app was launched back in 2016. However, back then, it didn’t gain much momentum. Then, along came the dreaded coronavirus and the accompanying lockdown. Suddenly, it is the app that has become a household name and for good reason too.

Houseparty is just what is needed to enter an alternate virtual reality, where instead of being cooped up at home alone, we are having a good time with loved ones via a video call. You might be wondering what’s so special about this particular app? Well, there are so many others that offer the facility of video calling, but what makes this social networking app fun is that along with the video, there are also fun games that can be played in-app while chatting.

Another ingenious feature is the presence of virtual rooms. Users can switch between them much like moving between rooms in an actual party! Cool, isn’t it?

No harm at all in building up our knowledge banks a little while we are confined at home, is there? Quiz Up is a trivia game with over 600,000 questions hailing from over 1,200 topics. Enough with the fun, games, and chatter. Lockdown or no lockdown, health is wealth and we all know that very well. However, lethargy and general laziness tends to creep up on us when we are trapped at home. It also means that physical exercise is severely inhibited. However, we need to remember that now more than ever, we need to boost our immune system through any means possible. This is where Aaptiv jumps in.

Whoever thought of taking the cult favorite board game Ludo to the digital medium was a true genius I tell you. Social distancing and isolation becomes a blur as one gets engrossed in the game. In-game chat options, and the choice to play with friends almost makes it seem as if the game is being played over an actual board. The nostalgia though is something I must warn you about – it does make you think of the time when we took meeting our loved ones for granted. Sigh.

See, now food is life! Literally. Since all the fancy restaurants have been closed and take away/delivery aren’t very safe options given the current situation, cooking is the way to go. The best part about SuperCook, and also one of the main reasons it is highly recommended nowadays, is that recipes can be sought in accordance with the ingredients available.

Truly, a God sent! While it provides us with some welcome relief during lockdown, at the same time, it is also a wonderful app for when this situation is over.

Like I said earlier as well, the current times are hard. Of course, mental stress and anxiety is part and parcel of this terrifying virus. However, we need to take measures to ensure some degree of control and meditation is an excellent way to do just that.

Through mindful breathing and a focus on mental well-being, the app will help to reduce stress levels as well as help you sleep better! Probably, this is also the only way to keep them out of mischief which just seems to follow them everywhere!

Plopping them down in front of the TV is one way for sure. And hey, no judging – we are all doing the best we can. However, apps such as this one can be a constructive way to utilize screen time. Also, there is a lot of kid-friendly content according to the kids age, and if you pick some videos out beforehand, kids will be engaged watching something they will learn from. My little one learnt drawing and coloring hacks!

Of course, this is a time in which everyone is under immense pressure. The threat of catching the virus, coupled with the stress of being indoors for large amounts of time, working from home, all of these along with other factors are without a doubt weighting quite heavily on everyone’s minds. Pakistani food is popular throughout the world for a reason. While we read a lot about the Butter Chickens, Niharis, Biryanis, and Karahi, what about the reason you fell in love with Pakistani food in the first place?

In this list, I purposely leave out main course dishes and focus instead on popular easy-to-make starters, appetizers, desserts, and beverages that are an essential part of Pakistani cuisine.

The purpose, you ask?

For Pakistanis, this list just may remind you of some timeless favorites you have been missing out. After all, with dozens of fancy restaurants opening up every week, who can blame you for forgetting a few childhood favorites.

For all others, it’s a perfect place to start your masalay-daar (‘spice-filled’) journey without delving deep into those hardcore lamb curries.

So unbuckle your belt and let the feasting begin.

Chatpati Fruit Chaat

Let’s begin the narrative by something healthy, shall we? There’s no doubt that fruit chaat is a favorite in every household without exception. And no two fruit chaats are ever the same.

Anyone can muster up the skills to make a half-decent fruit chaat: cut up a few seasonal fruits, add some spices, and voila!

Pakistani fruit chaats are a bit distinct from what you see across the world.

Firstly, there is a very dose of chaat masala, a unique blend of spices that gives the fruit chaat a wonderful zesty flavor.

And then there is the orange juice or marinade. Adding a generous cup or two can add a bittersweet kick to your chaat.

Don’t have orange juice handy? Simply add ‘Tang’ or ‘Rooh Afza’.

Samosa – Aloo, Cottage Cheese or Nutella

I can devour about a million of these! Typically found in bakeries with a thick crispy outer shell, they are served piping hot. Alone or with a range of dipping sauces, samosas are a regular at iftar tables and family gatherings. The sizes vary, of course, but the consensus is usually in favor, no matter what size!

Interestingly, you can make samosas with cottage cheese filling, behari chicken or even a spoonful of nutella! The variety is endless.

Aloo Pakora

One of the most popular Pakistani food cult favorites! I am yet to come across a single living soul who says they don’t love aloo pakoras. They are coated with chickpea flour and deep-fried, making them loaded with crunch.

Pakoras really have no equivalent in other world cuisines in terms of taste and texture. Spice it up by adding Trachyspermum Ammi to the batter and thank me later!

Baingan Pakoras

A healthier variation of the aloo pakoras is the one that is made with baingan (eggplant). Of course, these aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it is an amazing way to incorporate more vegetables into the diet.

The taste of the eggplant itself is kind of subdued by the coating and the crunchiness that accompanies deep frying. Use a sweet and tangy dip sauce to make it all the more delicious.

Dahi Phulki

Made up of yogurt and small portions of fried batter, dahi phulki served cold is an amazing way to satiate your taste buds. It tastes particularly amazing in hotter seasons when the cold yogurt helps alleviate some of the thirst and the heat.

The best thing about this dish is that the toppings can be tinkered with freely according to individual preference. I personally love some crispy papdi on top!

Spring Rolls

I am a sucker for all things crispy and fried. Understandably, traditional spring rolls are among my absolute favorites for family get-togethers. Paired with other dishes such as fruit chaat or dahi phulki, or even by themselves, piping hot spring rolls are simply mouthwatering.

You don’t need to follow any recipe, in particular, just add in a mixture of vegetables, noodles, and chicken to your liking and get creative! Again, a delicious way of incorporating more vegetables to your comfort food.

Chicken Bread

Not only does this taste great, but it also looks like something straight out of a bakery. The presentation is amazing too! Although Chicken Bread is served in various varieties across the world, there is absolutely nothing like one stuffed with a local blend of chicken and spices.

And let’s face it, a lot of the enjoyment of food comes from the way it looks, doesn’t it? It is also a very versatile recipe, as the chicken filling can be made just the way your family loves it. To add oomph to the filling, introduce it to some coal smoke at the end. You will love it.

Blooming Onion

A fancy name, an even fancier presentation, and exceptionally easy to make – sounds like a dream come true, doesn’t it?

Making this is easier than any other dish, and it also really adds to the decor at the table. It is increasingly becoming a staple in most middle-income Pakistani households.

Simply halve an onion and then create proportional cuts, dip it in flour batter, and deep fry! Done and done.

Fruit Salad with Cream

This one is a Ramadan favorite, especially if the holy month coincides with summer. The cream neutralizes the health benefits of a fruit salad, but who said Pakistani food was big on health anyways?

Mangoes with Cream

Mango is rightly said to be the king of fruits. Raw, pulped, or in a dessert, the flavor of mangoes is just out of this world.

Cutting up mango chunks mixed with cream and served ice-cold makes the whole family salivate at its mere mention. You will forget peaches and cream in no time.

It is heavy on the calories, but the taste is absolutely worth it. Mangos aren’t as popular in the west as they are in the east, so I would surely urge you to try it with an open mind.

Jalebi

I have an extremely strong sweet tooth. But even for those who don’t, Jalebi is something that just cannot be resisted. It truly has a force of its own, a magnetic pull so to say. Like many items on this list, Jalebi is very unhealthy and fattening.

But that shouldn’t stop you from a couple of bites every now and then. Treat it like Baklava, I would say.

Chanaa Chat

Chanaa chat is one of my absolute favorites. Along with being super tasty, it is also healthy. Boiled chickpeas, boiled potatoes, chopped onions, tomatoes, and green chilies, topped with crispy papdi – absolute heaven!

There are also variations to how this can be prepared. While some people prefer it with yogurt, others like it with imli chutney instead. But, one thing is for sure, you will be hard-pressed to find a household in Pakistan or India where this isn’t made.

One tip for easy and quick cooking is boiling a sufficient quantity beforehand and freezing it. This affords great convenience as all that needs to be done to prepare is thawing the frozen chickpeas!

Kachori

Fried puff pastry with scrumptious filling; what more could you want? In all truth, however, this is a common food item throughout the world that has been adapted through the addition of spices and a moong daal mixture. Usually eaten with a variety of dip sauces, it is truly irresistible. One of the popular street foods, it has now become a dish which is consumed by almost every household, especially in Karachi.

And for those who are conscious of hygiene with regards to street vendors (if you happen to be in Pakistan) or Pakistani restaurants, there are plenty of recipes available online.

Gulaab Jamun

Is there anyone here who has the will power to resist gulaab jamun? No, right?

These little dough balls soaked in sheera (sugar water with cardamoms) are like balls of heaven! Tim Horton’s Timbits and Dunkin Donut’s Mini’s do not stand a chance!

When served hot, it feels as if they just melt in the mouth.

Red Beans Salad

Salad made with red beans also includes chopped tomatoes, onions and is topped with spring onions. Adding a squeeze of fresh lemon juice really takes the taste to another level altogether.

While soaking and boiling the red lentils does take up some time, I find it is easier to boil a whole lot together and then freeze it. That way, all you need to do is defrost the red beans whenever the craving hits.

It is healthy and delicious, which is something we can’t say for most items here.

Imli Chutney

Technically, Imli Chutney at it’s core is a dip sauce. But it truly is in a league of its own – and therefore deserves mention separately as a distinct dish.

No Pakistani wedding or family dinner can be complete without Imli (tamarind) ki chutney. The sweet and sour taste compliments just about anything. In fact, it is almost criminal to eat pakoras without imli chutney. Add it to any dish such as Dahi phulki or even channa chaat, this baby just enhances the taste of the entire meal. I’m a big fan!

Limo Paani (Lemonade)

Not only is it super yummy, but it is also a wonderful way of ingesting salts and sugar. This allows for the normalization of electrolytes in our body.

How does the Pakistani version differ from the lemonade you find elsewhere? For one, it’s a little bitter thanks to the black pepper, salt, and sugar that goes into making it.

Rooh Afza

Speaking of thirst quenchers, meet the Monarch itself.

A refreshing and delightful drink, this iconic red concoction is a must in Ramadan. I highly doubt there is any Pakistani or Indian family that doesn’t have Rooh Afza occasionally. For those who haven’t tasted it, get ready for the most pleasant sweet rush your mouth will ever have.

I must warn you, the popular Pakistani food favorites mentioned here are quite addictive. Once you go through a few favorites from this list, you’ll be ready to graduate to the world of mouthwatering Karahis and Biryanis.

My only suggestion would be to keep a check on your serving size every time you are dealing with Pakistani and Indian food. It is generally a calorie-rich affair, so you’ll always have to keep yourself in check in case you get hooked.
